No water sales at football matches - 2007/01/20 16:13
[This is so silly, I do not know where to begin...] Ghana`s sports officials have taken the unsual step of banning water from football matches in an attempt to curb violence. The move comes after concerns that water bottles were increasingly being used as missiles and weapons at local league matches. The bottles were thought to be a key feature of the rioting that led to the death of 126 football fans at the Accra Stadium on 9 May 2001. Now the National Sports Council, which is responsible for the management of the country`s football stadia, has decided to ban the sale of water and alchohol during Premier League fixtures. Chief executive Emmanuel Owusu Ansah said the organisation had acted following a number of violent incidents at recent league games. The most recent was the rioting which broke out following a league match between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi`s Asante Kotoko. Fans of the two sides pelted the assistant referees with water bags and bottles to protest at his decisions. The fans also ripped off plastic seats from the May 9 stand and hurled them unto the pitch, which was the scene of Africa`s worst football disaster two years ago. But the decision to ban the sale of water has received a mixed reaction. A senior police commander, Kofi Boakye, said he supported the move. "It is a neccesary step to keep the stadiums safe," he said. The paper reported that it did not believe the ban could be "rationalised" and has urged the NSC to rescind the decision immidiately ---------
I say that a man must be certain of his morality for the simple reason that he has to suffer for it.
