Do you believe in God, Michael Owen? - 2007/02/19 09:47
I read a piece the other day that mentioned Owen`s upbringing and how devout his grandmother was. Few people also know that one of Pele`s 12 brothers was Bishop of Maracan?, or that Lev Yashin`s uncle on his mother`s side was Rasputin, "the Mad Monk of Siberia". After Googling, I came up with these interesting tidbits of info, which I thought to share with you: - Stanley Matthews, after a distinguished footballing career, became 102nd Archbishop of Cantuar having reverted to his birthname, Robert Runcie. In July 1981, he famously joined together what no man should put asunder, namely Gazza and his beloved doner. - George Best, upon being invited to the Vatican by Pope John Paul II, called His Holiness, "a smelly foreign eedjot with bad posture". When stopped of a sudden by Customs, the Vatican wine cellar was found amongst his baggage. - John Motson was Trevor Brooking`s choir master back in the dizzay. He described the event as "a panoply of bumboys". - When asked if he believed in God, Alan Shearer reportedly replied, "Feck, divvnt any tother to believe in, innvvnt er". Whilst I am in no position to comment on anyone`s beliefs -- seeing as how I`m hanging from a chandelier, lathered in whipped creme --, I can however state that I personally do believe in God (the one Abraham invented), and am quite chuffed to be in such illustrious religious footballing company as those above. Further, it`s good to find out that Graham Taylor is not the Anti-Christ after all (this year). ---------
Independence is my happiness, and I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good. - Thomas Paine, 1737 - 1809
