Re:Ken Bates "other" business instrests - 2007/02/01 21:41
Ken Bates first shot to fame in 1967 when he represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest, performing the eventual winning entry `Sing the World a Song`. On the back of this, he landed a recording contract with independant Jungle label Renk Records, and released a series of singles, produced by General Levy. Following a less-than-successful music career, he sunk his remaining money into a new venture - a shop in the Kings Road called `Catch 22` which sold only items that no-one wanted to buy. But in the kitsch and fun-fuelled 70`s, the idea took off, as people actually bought leopard skin ashtrays, and broken bits of polevaulters poles in droves, and by 1979 Bates ran four shops across London and was a millionaire. Tragedy struck in 1980 though, when his wife Trish, with whom he had built up the business empire tragically choked to death while sipping some tea. Undeterred, Bates decided once again that it was time for a new start, sold up and moved to Senegal where he ran successful snooker, darts and gay table-dancing clubs. In 1985 he returned to the Chelsea home he loved so well, and joined the board of the football club, despite never having been to a football match in his life, and suffering from allergies to turf, leather and materials used to build stadia. So there you go. ---------
